Trisha
As Trisha lay next to Walter that night, for the first time ever, after he returned at weekends, she didnât feel like cajoling him into making love to her.
She lay in his arms thinking how lucky she was to have him and how sorry she felt for Jenny, and yes, Martha, for though they both had the love of their man, it wasnât dependable, in that one could go off for long periods of time doing what he wanted to do, and the other had a sick husband. Yes, Walter went away, but she knew that every Friday night he would be home and he would call most nights to speak to her and that made it easier for her.
But suddenly, this peace of mind was shattered as Walterâs body shook with sobs.
âEeh, me love, what is it? Whatâs upsetting you?â
Though she said these words, she was filled with the fear of uncertainty.
âWalt? Walt, me darling. Tell me whatâs wrong?â
Still he didnât speak, and Trisha began to dread what he might say if he did.
Getting onto her elbow and facing him, she took his hands from his face. âWhatever it is, tell me. Donât suffer alone, me darling.â
âI â I canât . . . I . . . Oh, Trisha, thank you for loving me. Always know, no matter what, that I love you and Sally. That you are the only true family that I have, and that . . . well, I am trapped.â
âTrapped? How, darling? If you ainât happy, surely you can come back to the Vic and to us?â
âI canât . . . I â Iâve done things . . . I canât explain. Please donât make me. Just hold me, and help me.â
Trisha was mystified and afraid. What could Walter have done? Why couldnât he tell her?
He surprised her then by pulling her to him and kissing her, but with such passion she was taken away from the frightening place that held doubts and uncertainty and caught up in Walterâs demanding lovemaking, not able to believe that heâd rolled on top of her and had entered her!
But disappointment filled her. This was the moment she had longed for, but in his movements, it seemed to her that he was trying to prove something, rather than being consumed by a need to make love to her and to give himself to her.
When it was over, she lay there, not having reached her own climax, and feeling used, until Walter held her so lovingly and stroked her hair. âI so want to be like other men, darling. You helped me to be that.â
Thinking he was referring to him not being able to make love before she held him gently. âOf course you are, look what you just did.â Fibbing a little, she told him, âYou loved me like Iâve never been loved, and it was wonderful. You donât expect anything, you donât take from me, you give to me.â
In this, she felt she was only lying this once,
